Community Guide: Community Leadership
by Garthilk | Jul 30, 2008 - 10:40 PM
|
This weeks community guide focuses on being a leader for your community. Whatever community situation you find yourself in right now, I want you to be the strongest community you can possibly be. A strong community is a tightly knit family, one that listens to one another. The biggest obsticle between a community leader and his community is the inability to listen as the other person is stating what is on his or her mind. I think Stephen Covey said it best, "Many people do not listen with intent to understand. They listen with intent to reply."
The goal of every leader should be to develop a tightly knit community. To do that, a community leader must be level-headed. It is difficult to illustrate how communities frequently fail to understand the difficulty of decisions that leaders must make. However, regardless of their ability to understand those decisions, community leaders have to take responsibility for making things right, even when the task is unpleasant. The goal being that in times of difficulty, a community leader must lead with his head and not his heart. - Community leaders don't have their own egos wrapped up in their leadership responsibilities.
- Community leaders don't make empty promises or threats.
- Community leaders aren't flattered by insincere praise.
Always have the authority to back up your words. As a community manager you are going to lose credibility when you make empty promises. I think everyone remembers George Bush's campgin plege, "Read my lips, no new taxes," and the fact that Bush didn't keep that promise. I think people forget that Bush lost the following election. Credibility is the one of the cornerstones of a good community leader. Doesn't matter if it's a guild, fansite, or professional developer.- A community gets to know one another.
- A community has values.
- A community offers one another security.
- A community has the bond of unity.
Your relationship with your community should be a personal one. Your nonverbal message as a community leader should be that you are commited to your community and you you will remain committed to them. Communities need to hear the message: "There is nothing you could do that could make me stop being commited to this community. That each member is, and will always be, an important part of this community."

38 Studios Interview
by Garthilk | Jul 30, 2008 - 9:49 PM
|
Massively has posted their interview with 38 Studios, featuring their Vice President of Marketing, Mary Kirchoff and Art Directors Thom Ang. The article is largely focused on marketing and big-picture plans for the studio. A studios foundation is perhaps the most important part of developing an MMO. As such, the article highlights some of the efforts being taken to get a good foundation for the studio and how staffing and middleware is a part of that plan.
|
Rather than recreating the wheel, there are these great technologies that already exist that can fill our needs. We spent a lot of time evaluating that perfect marriage, a combination of toolsets and middleware, so that our energies can be spent creating the story and the environment that those tools will let us build.
|
Readers will be somewhat dissapointed to hear that any annoucements regarding their games title or IP will likely not be released until this time next year. I know I am already looking forward to what is brewing in Maynard. Guess I'll have to wait till next year.
|
Our current plan is to announce the name of the game and launch the IP website (as opposed to the corporate website) about this time next year

Copernicus Concept Artwork
by Garthilk | Jul 30, 2008 - 7:37 AM
|
38 Studios and their first game in development code named "Copernicus" have been under wraps ever since the beginning. However this week we've got some concept artwork. One shows the skyline of a somewhat medieval city with architectural stylings from several cultures. The other, an interesting tree house obviously belonging to small denizens, perhaps faeries.
